The self-elegy is a creative form in which we are called to examine, name and mourn the many versions of ourselves we have left behind. But self elegies are not the only sites of mourning. They can also be calls to document and dig, to honor both loss and transformation. They also invite us, as the author Kara Dorris says, to investigate "versions of the self that are forgotten or that never existed." Together we will free write our way towards welcoming the grief that emerges from holding all the selves we have every been, or almost been, or dreamed of being, keeping each other company in both words and wordlessness.Â

Sometimes, after a great heartache, when we are most unguarded and open, we find in the rubble of our lives the infinite invitations to fall in love with the world. How is this possible? Join poet Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer for a conversation about meeting loss with vulnerability and even wonder. After her son Finn chose to take his life in 2021 just before his seventeenth birthday, Rosemerry noticed how her daily poetry practice (she had been writing a poem every day since 2006) helped her stay present during the most difficult time of her life. The paradox continues to stun her—how from deep pain can grow astonishing beauty. Though writing poems and other creative practices won’t change the facts of the loss, these practices can transform the grievers, opening us to the wonder of what is and isn’t still here.

Our proximity to privilege often ascertains how aware we are of power dynamics and the harm we’re enacting. Meaning, typically the more privilege we have, the less aware or skilled we are with power, conflict and community. And, if you aren’t sure who has power or rank in a room, it’s usually you. If you’re completely comfortable or unaware of the dynamics going on in a space, it’s typically because you haven’t had to continually navigate oppression and microaggressions. That’s how unearned power works, when you have it you’re less aware of it and it just feels normal. When you don’t have as much power, you’re continually aware of it and forced to navigate it. This gate may be very different given what identities you inhabit.
Let us feel the enormity of this. As we deepen our understanding of empire, our understanding of what’s happened and is happening current day.
During our time together we will explore regret, personal harm we’ve caused and collective harm we’ve done and/or are complicit in.

"“Grief and love are sisters, woven together from the beginning. Their kinship reminds us that there is no love that does not contain loss and no loss that is not a reminder of the love we carry for what we once held close.”"
